The country has various environmental strategies, plans and policies such as the National Environmental Action Plan (PNAE), the strategy and action plan for biodiversity conservation, the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan (PANA), and the National Development Plan (PND 2018-2022). Togo is linked to the international community through bilateral and multilateral cooperation agreements and has ratified almost all international conventions.

The government has committed to restoring 1,400,000 hectares of landscape by 2030. Indeed, land and landscape degradation is evident in a significant number of regions. One of the major causes is the heavy use of timber, utility wood, and especially firewood. To address this desertification, Togo has committed to the African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFR100).

AFR100's mission is to restore 100 million hectares of deforested and degraded landscapes by 2030 to capture the resulting benefits, including food security, biodiversity conservation, climate change resilience, and poverty reduction. The national target is 1,400,000 hectares.

The Lomé Dialogue is timely in that it creates a framework for exchanges between stakeholders on the theme of wood energy, in connection with the restoration of forest landscapes.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has renewed its support for Togo's sustainable development policy. In total, UNDP has allocated more than 1.6 billion CFA francs (over €2.4 million) to support 112 projects. These projects include the conservation of the national system of protected areas, the development of national documentation on climate change, the development of ecovillages, as well as the strengthening of vulnerable communities and nationally determined contributions (NDCs). In 2020, Togo reduced its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 27,57%, 10 points more than the baseline of 17,51%, and aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 31,14% by 2030, including a voluntary reduction of around 11%.

Household waste collection and wastewater disposal also represent one of the greatest challenges facing municipalities in Togo. Like agriculture, livestock farming, and fossil fuels, waste is responsible for methane emissions, another dangerous air pollutant responsible for the formation of ground-level ozone.

Furthermore, in September 2021, Togo became the fifth African country to join the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes. Through this initiative, the country hopes to improve its drinking water coverage by harnessing transboundary resources.
