Reference

The Port of Lomé is among the top 100 container ports in the world and among the top 5 regional container ports, with throughput rates of more than 40 containers per hour at the main container docks. As the country's main channel for external trade, the Autonomous Port of Lomé has been serving the national economy and that of the West African sub-region since 1967, the year it was opened. Over the past ten years, the Port Authority of Lomé has undergone a gradual transformation of its infrastructure, enabling it to become a logistics hub for the West African sub-region with continental ambitions. Goods collection procedures are now completely paperless, making it possible to pay invoices online. This performance is the result of the strong political will of the President of the Republic, His Excellency Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, who has succeeded in attracting capital through public-private partnerships. The platform is operated by the Togo Terminal group and Lomé Container Terminal (a joint venture between the China Merchants Group and the Italo Suisse MSC group).

Reference

The PAL offers several competitive advantages for the region. It is the only port on the West African coast that can reach several capitals in a single day, such as Lagos, Accra, and Cotonou. The port also serves landlocked countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. It thus offers the advantage of transporting goods at very competitive times and costs. With a natural depth of 16.6 meters, it is the only deep-water port on the West African coast that can accommodate deep-draft vessels. Thanks to its status as a free port, the handling and transfer of goods within the port are carried out without customs constraints, thus saving time in the processing of ships and goods. The Port of Lomé also houses a vast industrial free zone where industrial production units are located.

In order to comply with the security standards recommended by the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code), PAL has implemented new security measures, including the installation of a remote monitoring system for port facilities and a port security corps, thus ensuring optimal security for all assets.

The strengths of the PAL have helped boost the country's port activities. Container traffic at the Autonomous Port of Lomé increased by nearly 17% between 2019 and 2020 and by more than 12% between 2020 and 2021 despite the global health crisis. In 10 years, the growth of the PAL was 69%. The Port of Lomé is now ranked among the top 100 ports in the world, which is a feat for a country of 8 million inhabitants.
