Several actions are being undertaken to enable the development of various proven deposits in the short term and to enable Togo to take advantage of the current situation by promoting artisanal mining and adopting a new Mining Code. Mining sector development strategies must also integrate aspects related to post-mining management and the socio-economic development of local communities, to ensure the sustainability of the sector.

Togo has metal deposits, precious stones and radioactive minerals, chromite, manganese and bauxite. Other significant mineral occurrences coexist, such as diamonds and alluvial gold exploited by artisanal miners; mono- and poly-metallic mineralizations: zinc, lead, copper, silver, arsenic, nickel, etc.; platinoids, rare earths, rutile and ilmenite; radioactive minerals: autunite, uranium, thorium. Phosphate, limestone, crystalline dolomite and construction materials constitute the bulk of the mining products exploited in the country.

The mining sector is characterized by the historically predominant presence of the public sector in phosphate mining. However, increasing private sector investments tend to increase the diversification of this sector by leading to the exploitation of other types of mineral resources. Indeed, limestone, iron, and dolomitic marble now represent a significant share of the national GDP and export earnings.

According to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, as of April 2020, there were 73 mining titles held by 67 companies. However, the contribution of the mining and extractive industries sector to the state budget remains low.

It is worth noting that Togo has made significant progress in implementing the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) Standard. The EITI aims to strengthen government systems by enhancing public and corporate governance.
