Togo - Mining - A leading player in the phosphate sector

More than 10 years ago, the Togolese government adopted a plan worth more than 200 billion CFA francs (330 million $) to enable phosphate to regain its importance in the national economy. Togo is now among the top 15 global producers.

Led by the Société Nouvelle des Phosphates du Togo (SNPT), the plan included an initial phase of rehabilitation and upgrading of outdated production infrastructure, with the other two phases focusing on consolidation and industrialization. This plan led to the launch of two new mines, Dagbati and Nyita, near Lomé.

The country is among the top three phosphate producers in Africa. Its subsoil is said to contain three billion tons of phosphate. Phosphate production almost doubled in 2020, from 799,775 to 1,321,345 tons, according to the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) in its 2020 annual report. These figures are part of an upward trend (+87.8%), compared to recent years, when the country experienced a relative decline, particularly in 2016 and 2017, with production standing at approximately 732,500 tons and 843,000 tons respectively.

This return of production above the symbolic one million tonne mark is partly explained by the government's special attention to the sector in recent years. Indeed, over the past decade, significant investments were made to modernize the extractive sector, thanks in particular to the recovery plan worth more than 200 billion CFA francs.
