Togo is home to the leading pharmaceutical industry for the production of IV fluids in West Africa. In 2011, there was no dedicated pharmacy faculty in Togo. Courses were delivered by professors from the Faculty of Sciences and by speakers from Senegal and Burkina Faso. Thanks to scientific equipment provided by the Pierre Fabre Foundation in 2018 and support obtained from the University of Lomé and several donors such as the AUF (Agence universitaire de la Francophonie), UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund), and UNESCO, several projects have been developed by Togolese academics with the aim of better supervising the pharmaceutical supply chain. The pharmacy program at the University of Lomé has approximately 200 students. Graduates are destined to join hospitals, analysis laboratories, pharmacies, and the Central Purchasing of Essential Medicines (a public structure responsible for drug supply). This is a major challenge in a country that had only 230 pharmacists for 7 million inhabitants in 2015.
